Waiting Rooms Don’t Have to Be Wasted Time

Something surprising is happening in pediatric waiting rooms across New Jersey. The time families used to spend scrolling, fidgeting, or counting ceiling tiles is turning into something far more meaningful.

We just wrapped Phase I of our pilot, bringing real-world validation into busy pediatric ambulatory practices. The idea was simple: use gamification to transform waiting time into an opportunity to build health literacy. The result? It works, and it works better than we expected. Early impact, real change.

Across two multi-provider outpatient pediatric practices, the numbers tell a clear story:

  • Patient satisfaction while waiting jumped by 93 percent

  • 98 percent of users said the platform was easy to use

  • Each console reached an average of 710 users in a single month

  • Engagement extended beyond patients, with a 4 to 1 patient to caregiver ratio

In total, 1,420 users interacted with the platform, and 262 responded to an embedded survey designed to be quick, intuitive, and accessible.

Why this matters

Waiting rooms are one of the few moments in healthcare where attention is available but often underused. Families are already there, already thinking about health, and often open to learning. By meeting them in that moment with something interactive and engaging, we can turn passive time into active understanding.

This is not just about entertainment. It is about making health information approachable, memorable, and even enjoyable. When kids and caregivers engage together, learning sticks. Conversations start earlier. Confidence grows.

What’s next

We are already expanding across New Jersey, from federally qualified health centers to academic medical centers to solo practices. Different settings, different patient populations, same core outcome: people are engaging, learning, and leaving the waiting room better informed than when they walked in.

Phase I proved the concept. Now we are scaling the impact.

Because waiting time should not be wasted time.
